Everyone has them (I hope, or I’m all alone in this!). Basic life skills that you just don’t have. Things that are seemingly so simple or commonsense to others but you just missed out on when they were handing out the life skills. Maybe you were distracted by the snack table?
I have a couple of glaring gaps in my ‘life skills’ department, much to the simultaneous amusement and frustration of my husband.
For instance, I can’t cut cheese. I really, really suck at it. I can never make it a nice clean cut, it always ends up a bit jagged somehow.
Same with buttering bread. Just can’t do it. I have been known to put a hole in a piece of bread while attempting to butter it. I think I can’t butter bread because I don’t eat sandwiches (or perhaps I don’t eat sandwiches because I can’t butter bread).
It takes me ages to be able to ‘work’ the Glad Wrap (again, probably contributing to my lack of sandwich consumption). I just can’t manage to make it lay flat and not stick to itself.
I don’t know how to check anything ‘technical’ on my car. My dad did try to teach me once how to check the oil on my car but I honestly wouldn’t have a clue. Isn’t that what husbands are for?
I can’t say the word ‘sixth’. When I say it I sound more like I’m saying ‘sick-th’ (which apparently isn’t right). I will go to great lengths in a conversation to avoid saying the word ‘sixth’. This life skill fail is especially problematic at work when talking about dates. Maybe this is why I use the typical public service style of dates and say ‘6 September’ rather than ‘the sixth of September’.
Please make me feel better about my sheer lack of life skills, share some of your life skills fails with me!
