I mean, I could have won. I won’t really know until I check the ticket I have in my hot little hands (well actually in my wallet but ‘hot little wallet’ doesn’t really have the same ring to it). But I think it’s a pretty safe bet I haven’t won. We only buy a ticket for the big ones, a habit I kind of got from my Dad. We so infrequently buy tickets that when I buy one from the newsagent I ask for “a ticket for the big lotto” and when I get asked which one I ask for the one that costs $20 or $30 dollars. Hard core lotto player here!
Stu and I have a mental list of how we would spend our lotto winnings if we ever did win big. Stu tends to mentally spend all our imaginary lotto money before we even buy a ticket so we’ve agreed on a list of things we would spend our winnings on.
So today for my Friday Five I bring you my five ways I’d spend my lotto winnings (if we won an amount of money somewhere on the decent to ridiculous spectrum, winning $20 doesn’t count). For the sake of being interesting (or trying to be), I’ll spare you the boring details of paying off our mortgage and car loan, because as if you wouldn’t do that first! This is more of a frivolous and fun list of things to do with some extra money!
1. More travelling!
Europe was so much fun, and we would love to go back soon to explore some new places and visit some favourites again. I’d love to do a 6 month trip spending a month in 6 different places to really get a feel for a place and not just be a ‘tourist’. I’d probably want to do more of France, more of the UK, Spain, Scandinavian countries, Croatia, and Greece.
I also really want to go to Egypt, but that’s kind of a no-go at the moment (and Stu isn’t interested in Egyptian history so I’d probably take my Dad).
2. Decorate and refurnish the house
I’d love to go on a massive interior design shopping spree (or even just an Ikea shopping spree!) and totally do up the back half of our house (where all the spare bedrooms are). I’d love to ‘finish’ the house and the requires some serious moolah! I mean the full treatment: paint, furniture, lighting, soft furnishings, artworks, the lot!! I’d love to spend some serious time just doing up the house to my satisfaction!
3. Buy cars. Lots of cars (mostly for Stu, not me)
Stu has a bit of a thing for cars. Specifically VW Beetles. He has once told me that ‘Beetles are like puppies, but with wheels’ such is their cuteness and appeal to him. He has often told me he wants a ‘stable’ of cars and he keeps seeing old Beetles on CarSales he wants to ‘rescue’. I requested a Jaguar F-Type if we win the lotto, and he wants a Porsche Cayman. After that he can rescue as many old Beetles as he wants!
4. Be a lady of leisure for a while
I imagine that not waking up every morning and heading to work would be a novelty for a while but would eventually wear off. Although then I could blog full-time! Anyway, I’d enjoy being a lady of leisure for a little while and just enjoying some time off work and spending time with my husband and fur-baby. I’d kind of like having no commitments in my day and just living life one day at a time!
5. Donate to a charity
Winning ridiculous amounts of money is incredibly good fortune, and I believe that you should give back when you are blessed in that way. I’d want to donate some substantial amount of money to a charity of some kind, something that will do some real good. Probably not a ‘fun’ way to spend some lotto money but definitely a worthwhile one!
I have a sponsor child through Compassion Australia so I’d probably look there as a first port of call for donating some funds.
If you don’t hear from me for a little while after this it’s because we’ve won the lotto and run away to Europe. But that doesn’t seem overly likely so I’ll be back on Sunday with my week in pictures!
What fun things would you do if you won the lotto?
