After posting last week about figuring out what to wear now (my ‘mum style’ post) I stumbled across a blog called Unfancy by Caroline Rector which is all about her capsule wardrobe. I’ve come across the concept of capsule wardrobes before and always thought ‘oh I can’t do that, it’s too hard’.
But here I am figuring out what clothes I want to be wearing now and it seems like a really appealing concept! Caroline’s capsule wardrobe is 37 pieces (including shoes) and she re-evaluates her capsule every 3 months, swapping things in and out as seasonally required.
I’ve decided to give this whole capsule wardrobe a go for the next 3 months and see how I fare. I’ve narrowed down the pieces from my existing wardrobe that I think will work for the next 3 months and I have a little shopping list for some pieces I’m missing which will round out my capsule.
Caroline’s number includes tops, bottoms, dresses, jackets and shoes. She doesn’t include things like workout clothes, handbags or accessories in her capsule wardrobe.
Because I have a darling little girl who sometimes likes to spit up on me, which can necessitate several outfit changes in a day, I’ve also got a section of my wardrobe for ‘home wear’ that I’m not counting as part of my 37 pieces. This is mainly so that I don’t have to wear my other clothes if I’m just having a day at home and therefore don’t need to do a load of washing for my clothes every day just to have something to wear.
I also haven’t included singlet tops in my number because I need to wear them under a few of my tops to make breastfeeding bit easier (my fave singlets for layering are these seamless ones from Witchery, I have about 8 of them!).
Caroline recommends donating or storing the clothes that aren’t part of your capsule for that season. I’ve just stored all of mine because my body is still changing and I will be going back to work next year so I will likely want to wear them again or at least have the option of revisiting them (read: I can’t bring myself to get rid of them, just in case).
So we’ll see how I go with my little capsule wardrobe experiment, let me know if you would like to see what’s in my capsule wardrobe or want any more details about how it works.
Have you tried a capsule wardrobe before? Would you like to see some more posts on this?
