It’s time to check in for my monthly favourites! If you haven’t seen my other favourites posts, this is a monthly post series where I share my ‘favourites’ for the month – products, food, clothes, books and anything else I’m loving and couldn’t get enough of in the last month.
September just flew by with things ramping up at work, Grace turning 1 (I promise a post is coming soon!) and heading to Problogger. This year is just going by so fast, it’s hard to believe it will be Christmas in less than 3 months! (I can hear all the whispers to shhh about Christmas from here!!)
This month I’ve got some beauty products I’ve been using constantly, the striped top of my dreams, the book I’m fascinated with and the show we’re absolutely obsessed with right now.
It takes a lot for me to love a moisturiser. It’s the part of my skincare routine that changes up the most because I almost always buy a new brand of moisturiser when my current one is about to run out. (And this is only the second moisturiser to appear in my monthly favourites!) While I was at the airport on my way home from the Gold Coast, I picked up the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream because I knew the moisturiser I was using at home was about to run out. I am in love. It’s creamy but light, hydrating without making me oily or shiny and it melts into my skin so easily. After just a few short weeks of using it I can pretty much guarantee this will be a repurchase! That is high praise for me when it comes to a moisturiser!!
Onto the makeup I’ve been using and loving most this month. The first is one that I’ve had in a favourites post before but I have been reaching for it more than anything else for my eyeshadow this month, it’s my By Terry Ombre Blackstar in no 13 Perfect Brown. I am just obsessed with this all over again. It really is the ‘perfect brown’ for me. I love to swipe it on straight from the stick and blend it in with my fingers. I always use it with my NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base to make sure it stays in place all day and it’s just the perfect fuss-free, neutral eyeshadow for day-to-day life.
Another airport purchase was the Lancôme Grandiose Smudgeproof Mascara (which I can’t find online but I think the Grandiose Waterproof is the same and you can buy the original here*). I flirt with different mascaras a lot. I find that just about every mascara smudges under my eyes by the end of the day, which to be honest I had kind of made my peace with. But I tried this all the same because I am a sucker for a new mascara. And guess what? It does what it says! It didn’t smudge. Literally the only actually smudgeproof mascara I have used in a long long time. This will be a repurchase for sure!
An old favourite that I’ve rediscovered this month was my NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl. I have a serious love for these lip pencils, I don’t have anything that really comes close as a matte lip pencil. And while my Red Square is very well used, I had almost forgotten about Dragon Girl until this month and I am so glad to have found it again. It’s a beautiful pinky-red (rather than the orange-red of Red Square) and is the perfect pop of colour for me. If you haven’t tried the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils before, take this as your prompt to give them a go. I don’t think you’ll regret it.
If you follow my #everydaystyle posts on Instagram, it will come as no surprise to you that I love stripes, and in particular a striped shirt! It’s without a doubt my favourite print and this Ashlyn Spliced Stripe Shirt from Forever New was going to come home with me from the moment I spotted it! I love the different directions of the stripes on the pockets and the bottom half of the top, and I find that navy and white stripes are just a bit more wearable than black and white when the stripe is this fine. This is going to be such a hard worker in my wardrobe as it’s perfect worn casually with jeans and sneakers or dressed up with a pencil skirt and a blazer for work.
(If you’re interested in where to find the clothes I wear, I’ve got links to anything current that appears on my Instagram feed on my ‘As Seen on Instagram‘ page – this page links to my most recent posts, my clothes, the books I’m reading and more!)
I first heard about Gretchen Rubin’s ‘four tendencies’ and habit framework on The Lively Show (a long-term favourite) and was intrigued. I heard more about it in the Straight and Curly podcast and took the online quiz to find out what tendency I was. I thought for sure I was an Upholder, but it turns out I’m a Questioner. Which once I reflected on it made perfect sense! So I requested Better than Before by Gretchen Rubin*, the book that explores habits and the four tendencies, from my local library a while ago and it finally came in last month. I am totally loving it. I think going into it knowing what my type is makes a huge difference because I’m taking a lot of really applicable information out of it and I’m able to use it to understand myself and my habits. I’d definitely recommend giving it a read if you’re interested in habits and personality type things, and if you want to take the quiz to see which tendency you are, you can find that here.
It’s been a while since Stu and I have had a TV show we have watched together. During September we started to watch How to Get Away With Murder and I am totally hooked. We can only get about one episode in a night because of the time it takes to get Grace to bed, and then I’m exhausted and want to go to bed and read, but I am just loving having that time together watching a show we’re both really into. It’s such an interesting show and I’ve been totally invested in it from the first 10 minutes or so (which is rare for me), so it’s been a great series for us to watch. We binge watched it a bit over the long weekends and sadly finished it so now we’re on the hunt for another new show to watch together (until we can watch the new season!).
So those are my favourites for September, it’s a bit of a shorter one than usual which I think is due to being so preoccupied with Grace, work and travel over the last month but as I’m settling into a bit more of an everyday rhythm I think things should return to usual and I’ll be back with more things I’m loving at the end of this month!
What have you been loving over the last month?
